Used motor graders — the circle wears out before the paint does

Graders look calm in photos. On a haul road they tell on themselves.

Buyers compare CAT motor grader vs XCMG motor grader a lot. I care less about the argument and more about the circle and the moldboard. Blade edge thin? Moldboard bent? Circle with so much play that fine grading becomes a fight? That’s your real quote adjustment — not whether the seat fabric matches the brochure.

Ask for video of side-shift and tip while someone articulates the machine. Standing still with the blade down proves almost nothing. Listen around the tandem. Weird noise there ages poorly. Tires: sidewall cuts, mixed diameters — finish quality goes to hell and then the operator gets blamed.

Hours. Take them seriously, but ask what the machine did. Highway finishing hours and mine road abuse are different animals that somehow share an hour meter.

CAT familiarity helps in some markets. XCMG often wins on price for similar weight. Neither forgives a bad circle. If you’re building a small road package — grader + roller + loader — tell us. Freight and timing get less stupid when it’s one shipment instead of three separate “almost ready” stories.

Port, blade width preference if you have one, CAT/XCMG/either. That’s enough to start.
